What separates an ATS-integrated employment screening platform from a consumer background-check service, and why that distinction matters legally.
Not all "background check" products are built for employment screening. The distinction matters more than it looks.
Consumer-grade people-search and background-check services (the kind you'd use to look someone up personally) are not built for FCRA compliance, adverse-action workflows, or ATS integration. Using one for hiring decisions in the US, for example, can create real legal exposure under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Genuine employment screening platforms are purpose-built around compliant disclosure/authorization forms, adverse-action letter automation, and audit trails.
If a vendor's marketing reads like a consumer product ("find anyone," "reverse phone lookup") rather than an HR compliance product, it's the wrong category of tool for hiring decisions, regardless of price.
