Gig/freelance marketplaces solve a different problem than your core ATS. Here's where they genuinely fit into a broader hiring strategy.
Gig economy platforms (large freelance marketplaces) serve a specific need: fast access to a large, self-service pool of independent talent for discrete tasks or projects, distinct from both traditional employee hiring and curated freelance/contractor platforms.
Dedicated freelance/contractor hiring platforms (see our freelance hiring guide) often pre-vet and curate talent, trading pool size for quality assurance. Gig economy marketplaces are typically larger, more self-service, and put more of the vetting burden on you as the hiring party.
Ongoing, embedded contractor relationships, highly specialized or senior work, or anything requiring deep trust and context — these tend to work better through curated platforms or direct sourcing rather than open marketplaces.
